PROFILE
MEMA Architects (M. Economides + M. Akkelidou Architects LLC) is a professional partnership founded in 1991. Throughout this time, our studio has been involved in numerous projects, both in the private and public sector, acquiring a wide range of experience and knowledge in all facets of architectural practice. Our studio has strived successfully to excel in architectural designs, designing memorable buildings and spaces. At the same time our designs address our clients’ specific briefs and needs through aesthetically elegant, technically informed and financially viable solutions.
VALUES
We truly believe that architecture is the unique art of creating buildings and spaces for people to inhabit and live in; spaces that are beautiful, memorable, socially responsive, and responsible—sometimes even deeply profound. We conceive the design of each project as the careful balance between the quality of spatial experience, context, and function.
TEAM
Architecture often begins with a singular vision, rooted in creativity and intent, yet it is realized through the collective expertise of dedicated architects and interdisciplinary professionals. It is both an individual act of imagination and a collaborative endeavor, shaped through talent, shared vision and knowledge, dialogue, and the coordinated efforts of many skillful hands and minds. This is the working ethos of our studio and practice, shared by a great team of committed, skillful architects who share the same values and form the backbone and limbs of our studio.
AWARDS
Marios Economides and Maria Akkelidou were the recipients of the 2016 Republic of Cyprus State Award for Architecture for the Kavo Gkreko Visitor Centre, the 1st prize for the Municipal Theatre of Pafos and the 2nd prize for the New State Theatre in Nicosia. Since the establishment of their studio, they received six 1st prize and four 2nd prize awards for projects submitted in various architectural competitions in Cyprus.
